The High Court Division last week formed a nine-member experts committee to find out disparity faced by O/A Level students and SSC/HSC students during the intake in the public universities and medical colleges. The members include one representative from Bangladesh University Gants Commission, education ministry, director-general of the health services, Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, British Council, English Medium Schools and two representatives from Bangladesh Medical and Dental College. The court directed the University Gants Commission to submit the report of the special committee to the court within four months and progress report on the issue every month. The commission was asked to post its two officials to the committee for giving secretariat support. The court asked the committee to find out if there was a discriminatory process in place when students of English medium schools sit for the admission tests since the question papers in almost all the reputed universities and institutions are prepared based on the syllabus followed by the students of national curriculum. The court also asked the committee to find out whether there are discriminations in the admission process in public universities and medical colleges. The committee is to make recommendations in their report to ensure that the previous grades obtained by O and A Levels students may properly be valued in such a way so that there is no disparity between the students coming from two different backgrounds. The committee is also asked to find out how the equivalency is measured between the two different mediums of education and also whether the ‘optional’ subject allows the SSC/HSC examinations any ‘extra benefit’? Committee was also asked to make recommendations in the report to ensure setting questions for admission tests which would be neutral and will cover both the syllabuses of national curriculum and the English Medium students. The duty-free concessions have been declared for import of 2,000CC hybrid motor cars or micro-bus, or up to 4,500CC hybrid jeep or one electric motor-run vehicle or other vehicles with only electric motor propulsion. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued a Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) on Wednesday, signed by its Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem. This is in addition to existing benefits allowing MPs to import duty-free 1,650CC petrol or gasoline-run motor vehicle or up to 1,800CC diesel-run motor vehicles or up to 2,000CC microbus, up to 3000CC petrol or gasoline-run jeep, 4,500CC diesel-run jeep. An MP can import one vehicle during his/her tenure without having to pay customs duty, sales tax, development surcharge and import permit fee. Meanwhile, almost all MPs have imported vehicles under this facility. The duty-free benefit on import of vehicles was introduced during HM Ershad's rule on May 24, 1987. Judge Timothy Walmsley also gave a life sentence to their neighbour William "Roddie" Bryan but ruled that he could seek parole after 30 years in prison, the minimum sentence allowed for murder under Georgia law. Echoing comments made by Arbery's anguished relatives earlier in the hearing at Glynn County Superior Court, the judge condemned the three men for what he described as their mistake of failing to see Arbery as just another neighbour. He said he gave the McMichaels the harshest sentence available in part because of their "callous" words and actions captured on a cellphone video that sparked national outrage when it became public in the summer of 2020. "It was a chilling, truly disturbing scene," the judge said of the frame in the video where McMichael begins to lift his shotgun at Arbery while the 25-year-old is about 20 feet away. "I kept coming back to the terror that must have been in the mind of the young man running through Satilla Shores." In November, a jury found Gregory McMichael, 66, his son Travis McMichael, 35, and their neighbour Bryan, 52, guilty of murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal intent to commit a felony. The judge agreed with prosecutors and Arbery's relatives that the three men, who are white, had "assumed the worst" about Arbery, who he said was "hunted down and shot, and he was killed because individuals here in this courtroom took the law into their own hands." The state case hinged on whether the defendants, under a now-repealed Georgia law permitting citizen arrests, had a right to confront Arbery on a hunch he was fleeing after committing a crime. In the end the jury was not swayed by tearful testimony from Travis McMichael, the only defendant to take the stand, that he shot only in self-defence.
